Earle Tries End-Run, Fails

On December 19th [tag]Ronnie Earle[/tag] got court proceedings placed on hold in [tag]Tom DeLay[/tag]’s trial while Earle appeals the dismissal of the conspiracy charge.

And then he started filing subpoenas in the case.

DeLay gets court to halt, void subpoenas

A Texas appeals court Monday granted Rep. Tom DeLay’s request to stop a prosecutor from filing subpoenas in the former majority leader’s pending money laundering case.

The Third Court of Appeals panel in Austin, Texas, also said that several subpoenas issued by Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle are null and void because DeLay’s trial is on hold.

“Ronnie Earle was abusing his power and getting subpoenas issued by a court that had no jurisdiction,” said Matt Hennessy, one of DeLay’s Houston lawyers.

Hennessy said DeLay asked the court to step in after Earle issued a subpoena for his wife, Christine.

Bryan Case, director of appellate division of the Travis County district attorney’s office, said Earle’s office respects and will abide by the court’s decision.

“We have issued these subpoenas in order to be ready for trial in a timely manner,” Case said.

They issued the subpoenas to be ready for trial in a timely manner. Yeah, right. We believe you.

Earle asked for, and received, a halt in the trial so he could appeal dismissal of a charge, consequently impinging on Tom DeLay’s right to a speedy trial, and then he tried to use the time he was getting to further his “case” against Tom DeLay.

Good on the court to see it for what it was.

Wednesday is Eat An Animal for PETA Day

March 15 (the Ides of March) is [tag]Eat An Animal for PETA Day[/tag]. I am personally making this Eat An Animal for Peta Week…

Monday Lamb Chops Vesuvio
Pre-heat oven to 350°F
Marinade:
½ cup olive oil
2 teaspoons garlic salt
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon oregano
mix ingredients well
place 4 lambchops in an ovenproof dish (I use a glass 8 x 8 cake pan)
cover lambchops with marinade, making sure to coat all sides
Place in 350°F oven for about 30 minutes
Tuesday Schweineschnitzel
4 (6-ounce) pork cutlets
Salt and freshly ground -pepper to taste Flour for dredging
1 Egg
1 teaspoon Water
1 c Fresh bread crumbs
4 tablespoons Butter or margarine
Lemon wedges (for garnish)
Pound the cutlets until thin. Sprinkle lightly on both sides with salt and pepper. Dredge them lightly but thoroughly in flour.
Beat the egg lightly with the water and dip the floured cutlets in the mixture; coat with crumbs. Using the side of a kitchen knife, press the cutlets lightly so the crumbs will adhere well to the meat.
Heat the butter in a large skillet and, when it is hot but not brown or smoking, saute the cutlets in it until they are golden brown on both sides.
Wednesday
Eat An Animal for PETA Day
Easy Pot Roast
3-4 pound Chuck Roast
package of dry onion soup mix
heavy duty aluminum foil (you need enough to completely wrap and seal the meat, or to tightly cover a low sided oven proof pan large enough to hold the meat)
Put the meat on the foil or in the pan
Sprinkle the whole package of onion soup mix evenly over the top
Wrap and/or seal
Place in a 350°F oven for about 2 hours.
Thursday Jerky Turkey Patties
Use either ground turkey and make your own patties, or use frozen turkey patties.
Heat about 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet
Place turkey patties in pan and cook about 3 minutes, flip patties
sprinkle Caribbean Jerk seasoning to taste on the cooked side, cook about 3 minutes more and flip again…
Sprinkle newly cooked side with Jerk seasoning and cook for about 3 more minutes or until inside is white.
Friday
Saint Patrick’s Day!
Corned Beef and Cabbage
4 cups hot water
1 large or 2 medium onions, cut into wedges
1 3-lb. corned beef round or brisket, packaged with spices
8 small white or yellow potatoes, scrubbed and cut into quarters
1 head of green cabbage (about 1 1/2 lbs.), cored and cut into 10 wedges
lemon wedges (for garnish – and it adds great flavor to the corned beef on your plate…)
Place the corned beef in the water in the slow cooker. Add onions and scatter the potatoes over the top and along the sides.
Cover and cook on the High heat setting 4 hours. Remove the lid and scatter the cabbage wedges over the top. Cover and continue cooking on High 3 to 4 hours longer, or until the beef is tender. To serve, carve the beef into slices and serve with the cabbage and potatoes, with some of the cooking liquid spooned on top of the beef to keep it moist.

Slobokan’s Site O’Schtuff is also talking about Eat An Animal for PETA Day today… And I must thank him for the inline trackback and pingbacks plugin that he devised. It works great!

President Bush's Remarks At National Newspaper Association Government Affairs Conference

Partial Transcript:

President: Whereabouts?

Questioner: Aurora, Colorado.

President: Oh good. Thanks.

Questioner: Recently in our town a teacher was suspended for remarks critical of your State of the Union message, made the talk shows, etc. Compared you to Hitler and, actually I’ve heard the tape, he did, he said Hitleresque… {President laughs} It’s not the…

President {laughing} He’s not the only one you know.

Questioner: And it is not the content of my question though. My question is about your sense of the free speech right in the classroom or in public to criticize you without being unpatriotic.

President: Yeah, I think people should be able to criticize me all they want. And they do.

{laughter}

President: Now what are you all laughing at over there? Don’t cheer ’em on. Look, I think the great thing about… Look… There are some certain basic freedoms that we’ve got to protect. The freedom of people to express themselves must be protected. The freedom of people to be able to worship freely, that freedom is valuable. I tell people all the time, “You are equally American if you are Christian, Jew, or Muslim. You are equally American if you believe in an Almighty or don’t believe in an Almighty.” That’s a sacred freedom. The right for people to express themselves in the public square is a freedom.

Obviously there’s [sic] limitations. If, for example, someone is inciting violence, or the destruction of property, or public, you know, causing somebody harm. But the idea of being able to express yourself is a sacred part of our society. And that’s just what distinguishes us from the Taliban. And that’s important for Americans to understand. We are in an ideological struggle. And one way for people to connect the ideological struggle with reality is to think about what life was like for people under the rule of the Taliban. If you didn’t agree with their view of religion, you were punished. If you tried to send your little girl to school, you were punished. These people have a backward view. I believe religion is peaceful. I believe that people that have religion in their heart are peaceful people. I believe these people have subverted a great religion to accomplish a political end.

So thank you for bringing that up. I appreciate it. People say to me, my buddies in Texas, “How do you handle all this stuff?” After a while you get used to it. {laughter} But you have to believe in what you’re doing, see? You have to believe in certain principles and beliefs and you can’t let the public opinion polls and focus groups cause you to abandon what you believe and become the reason for making decisions. My job is a job where I make a lot of decisions. And I decide big things and little things. And there’s [sic] certain principles to decision-making. You make decisions. You have to make a lot of decisions. And you don’t put your finger in the air to figure out how to make a decision. And neither should the President of the United States. You have to know what you believe. Certain good decision-making rests on certain basic principles. I believe in the universality of freedom. I believe democracies lead peace. I believe people ought to worship freely. I do believe there’s an Almighty God that has spread freedom, making freedom available for everybody. I believe in private enterprise, I believe in free enterprise. I believe in high standards in education. These are basic beliefs that I’m not going to change. I know some would like me to change. But you can’t be a good decision-maker if you’re trying to please people. You’ve got to stand on what you believe. That’s what you’ve got to do. If you’re going to make decisions that are solid and sound. And I understand some of the things I’ve done are unpopular. But that’s what comes with the territory.

I am a Lily

HASH(0x8c84c68)
You are a Lily:

You are graceful, gentle, calm, and pure and perhaps a little shy (though your shyness is part of your charm). You are a very honorable person who always wants to do the right thing. Your calm attitude has a soothing effect on others.

Symbolism: The lily has long been used as a symbol of majesty, honor, chastity, and purity of heart.

Update on Christina Desforges' Death

I have been receiving a lot of search hits on Christina Desforges lately so I googled the news…

Fox News has a story from yesterday on the coroner’s report on her death. Apparently she died of a lack of oxygen to her brain, not from anaphylaxis as was previously thought.

Coroner Michel Miron told The Associated Press that it appeared that Christina Desforges, 15, had suffered from “cerebral anoxia,” or a lack of oxygen to the brain, which caused serious damage.

He provided no further details — other than to say that no foul play was suspected in Desforges’ death — because he has yet to submit a final report to the provincial coroner’s office.

Illinois Rejects Driver Card for Illegals

Via The Capitol Fax Blog.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Illinois Legislature rejected a bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants to get a certificate to drive legally in the state. The bill was defeated 59-52. The Trib also reports that supporters of the bill are calling this a victory because more lawmakers were in support of it this time.

Under the measure, undocumented immigrants would have to pass driving tests, present a tax identification number, a foreign passport, file an affidavit that they would apply to be a permanent resident and hand over all illegally obtained driver’s licenses.

Rep. Ron Stephens (R-Mulberry Grove) said people should instead report to immigration offices, become documented and get a legal driver’s license.

Rep. Stephens has it right. Be here legally in the first place, you get the rights and privileges attendant thereto. The granting of rights and privileges to those here unlawfully only encourages such unlawfulness.
