Welcome

Patterico readers!

Patterico is opening a new, related blog called The Jury Talks Back. He was looking for a header for the new blog and I designed this one for him.

Veterans' Day

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Remember me:

Monday Morning Musings

The Christmas tree lots are being set up. The red wooden racks are up and ready for a tree delivery in the Super KMart parking lot. Yesterday I went to Walmart for Kung Fu Panda. Walmart was packed. I also went to JoAnn Fabrics to get a few things and it was packed too. Lots of stuff is on sale especially Halloween leftovers, but Christmas stuff is on sale too.

We did a lot of movie watching this week, Get Smart, The Forbidden Kingdom, Incredible Hulk, and The Love Guru Mariska Hargitay…

The CGI Hulk was incredible, his face was so expressive.

We also watched The Land That Time Forgot on one of the Encore channels. 1975. Very visible strings/wires on the pterydactyl that made off with the Neanderthal. Very obvious models and puppet monsters. Fun to watch with an almost 8-year-old who doesn’t really know those crappy special effects.

Peeves Vol. 4

Further in the occasional series, Peeves, Peeves Vol. 2, and Peeves Vol 3.

Bare/Bear

Bare: naked, uncovered. Testimony laid bare the inner workings of XYZ Corp.

Bear: An ursine mammal; black bear, polar bear, grizzly bear… Also to hold up, support, carry. She had to bear the weight of the injured child. The sadness of the situation was almost too much to bear.

Speak/Speech

“Speach” is the illegitimate child of speak and speech and it is incorrect.

Phrases:

It’s toe the line, not tow the line. It’s getting as close to the line as you can without going over, hence toeing the line. Towing the line would be dragging it behind you.

It's Over

Finally. This was the longest election season I’ve ever seen.

Questions:

1. Who will Blagojevich pick to replace Obama as Illinois’ freshman senator?

2. If Rahm Emanuel becomes Obama’s Chief of Staff, who will Blagojevich pick to replace him.

3. Will Blagojevich pick himself for either office (Rahm Emanuel is currently holding the congressional seat that Rod Blagojevich held before he became Governor)?

4. What will the next four years be like?

I Voted

Hubby went to the polling place at 6:20 this morning and he was number 60 in our precinct. I went about 11:50 am no lines, no problems, although The Little Guy was disappointed that they didn’t have a sample ballot that he could fill out while I was filling out the real ballot. There was someone electioneering in the parking lot for the democrats, but then he saw my McCain/Palin lipstick kiss button and said I could just throw the card he gave me away…

No exit polling.
