Peeves Vol. 4

November 7, 2008 – 2:02 pm by kimsch

Further in the occasional series, Peeves, Peeves Vol. 2, and Peeves Vol 3.

Bare/Bear

Bare: naked, uncovered. Testimony laid bare the inner workings of XYZ Corp.

Bear: An ursine mammal; black bear, polar bear, grizzly bear… Also to hold up, support, carry. She had to bear the weight of the injured child. The sadness of the situation was almost too much to bear.

Speak/Speech

“Speach” is the illegitimate child of speak and speech and it is incorrect.

Phrases:

It’s toe the line, not tow the line. It’s getting as close to the line as you can without going over, hence toeing the line. Towing the line would be dragging it behind you.

  1. Did you cover the phrase “for all intents and purposes” yet, and how it’s NOT “for all intensive purposes”? That one always sets my teeth on edge.

  2. kimsch says:

    Yep. In volume 3!
