Veterans’ Day 2018

Armistice Day, Veterans’ Day, Remembrance Day

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month…

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Fall Back 2018

It’s that time of year again, time to set the clocks back to Standard time. You don’t have to do it if you’re in Puerto Rico, Arizona, or Hawaii because they don’t switch to Daylight Saving Time in the first place.

Meal Kits

I tried a meal kit the other night. At the grocery store, they had a case with some meal kits from Chef’d and I bought two to try. One with pork chops and one with flank steak.

The Pork one was Apple-Mustard Glazed Pork Chops with Mashed Potatoes and Baby Carrots.

The packaging was clean and bright, easy to see what was inside. The final product.
The recipe and instructions are under the wrapper. What’s included and what I need to provide.
The plastic divided case. Everything laid out on a sheet pan.
The recipe/instruction Chopped apple and onion.
Pork chops patted dry with salt and pepper. Pork chops dredged in flour.
In the pan, seared, with apples and onions, pre-sauce. Final product plated.

It was pretty easy to follow the instructions and prepare the meal. I would certainly recommend reading the instructions through at least once and maybe twice before attempting it.

It did taste fantastic.

I bought this on my own and was not compensated for it in any way.

Daylight Saving Time

It’s that time of year again.

This year, Florida has voted to keep Daylight Saving Time and not “Fall Back” in November.

Daylight Saving Time is not observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and most of Arizona.

States and Territories may exempt themselves from Daylight Saving Time by State law. But there is no provision to KEEP Daylight Saving Time over Standard Time. That requires either an act of Congress – passage of a bill and have it signed into law by the President -or- the Secretary of Transportation can issue regulations making the change.

Changing Florida to Daylight Saving Time all the time would put Florida on Atlantic time in the “winter” when the rest of the country goes to Standard time and matches back up with Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and most of Arizona. As the “Fall Back” to Standard Time occurs the first Sunday in November now and Election Day is the Tuesday after the First Monday in November. In 2018 it’s the 6th, in 2020 it’s the 3rd because of Leap Year. 2022 it’s November 8th, 2024 it’s November 5th, 2026 it’s the 3rd again, 2028 it’s the 7th, 2030 it’s the 5th. It isn’t until 2032 when Election Day is on the 2nd when Election Day is in Daylight Saving Time for everyone who observes it normally. If Florida is on Atlantic Time, Florida’s polls will close a full hour ahead of New York and Washington D.C. In any year that November doesn’t begin on a Monday.

So, anyway, buy some batteries today so you can change the ones in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. And don’t forget to set those clocks that have to be set manually back one hour before you go to bed Saturday Night.

As we head into tax season the charlatans will be coming out of the woodwork and trying to get anyone that they can.  I don’t answer the phone if I don’t recognize the number or I’m not expecting a call. Today caller ID showed a number purporting to be from Washington DC. I didn’t answer and it went to voicemail.

“Audit we found that there was a fraud and misconduct on your tax which you are hiding from the Federal government. This needs to be rectified immediately so do return the call as soon as you receive the message. The number is 202-897-2653. I repeat again 202-897-2653. Thank you.”

Please pass on to persons who may be at risk to be taken in by these fraudsters.

Garlic Lamb Chops

International Eat a Tasty Animal for PETA Day is coming up on March 15th as it does every year. IEATAPETA Day was started  in 2003 as a response to an ad campaign by PETA that used Holocaust terminology, quotes, and pictures to liken the human consumption of chickens to the slaughter of the Jews by the Nazis.

In honor of the 15th Annual IEATAPETA Day, I’ll be posting recipes leading up to the date.

Here’s one for Lamb Chops Sizzled with Garlic.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas

And Lo, the Angel of the Lord came upon them:

And the Angel said unto them, “Fear not For behold I bring you good tidings of great Joy which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord.”

A Date Which Will Live in Infamy

Early on a beautiful Sunday morning 76 years ago, the world changed.

At 7:55 a.m local. December 7, 1941 the attack begins.

Pearl Harbor Attack
Pearl Harbor Attack

The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor to remove what it saw as a threat to the empire’s southern expansion. The Pearl Harbor attack hurt us badly, but it also hardened our resolve and brought us fully into WWII.

Snopes has some photos that were purported to be found in an old Brownie camera years after the attack. The story was untrue, but the photos are archival and genuine.

The U.S. Navy has a Pearl Harbor site with more photos.

Chris at A Large Regular has linked to this National Geographic Pearl Harbor site in the past. It has a multimedia timeline, survivor stories, kid’s section, and more.
