President Bush's Remarks At National Newspaper Association Government Affairs Conference

Partial Transcript:

President: Whereabouts?

Questioner: Aurora, Colorado.

President: Oh good. Thanks.

Questioner: Recently in our town a teacher was suspended for remarks critical of your State of the Union message, made the talk shows, etc. Compared you to Hitler and, actually I’ve heard the tape, he did, he said Hitleresque… {President laughs} It’s not the…

President {laughing} He’s not the only one you know.

Questioner: And it is not the content of my question though. My question is about your sense of the free speech right in the classroom or in public to criticize you without being unpatriotic.

President: Yeah, I think people should be able to criticize me all they want. And they do.

{laughter}

President: Now what are you all laughing at over there? Don’t cheer ’em on. Look, I think the great thing about… Look… There are some certain basic freedoms that we’ve got to protect. The freedom of people to express themselves must be protected. The freedom of people to be able to worship freely, that freedom is valuable. I tell people all the time, “You are equally American if you are Christian, Jew, or Muslim. You are equally American if you believe in an Almighty or don’t believe in an Almighty.” That’s a sacred freedom. The right for people to express themselves in the public square is a freedom.

Obviously there’s [sic] limitations. If, for example, someone is inciting violence, or the destruction of property, or public, you know, causing somebody harm. But the idea of being able to express yourself is a sacred part of our society. And that’s just what distinguishes us from the Taliban. And that’s important for Americans to understand. We are in an ideological struggle. And one way for people to connect the ideological struggle with reality is to think about what life was like for people under the rule of the Taliban. If you didn’t agree with their view of religion, you were punished. If you tried to send your little girl to school, you were punished. These people have a backward view. I believe religion is peaceful. I believe that people that have religion in their heart are peaceful people. I believe these people have subverted a great religion to accomplish a political end.

So thank you for bringing that up. I appreciate it. People say to me, my buddies in Texas, “How do you handle all this stuff?” After a while you get used to it. {laughter} But you have to believe in what you’re doing, see? You have to believe in certain principles and beliefs and you can’t let the public opinion polls and focus groups cause you to abandon what you believe and become the reason for making decisions. My job is a job where I make a lot of decisions. And I decide big things and little things. And there’s [sic] certain principles to decision-making. You make decisions. You have to make a lot of decisions. And you don’t put your finger in the air to figure out how to make a decision. And neither should the President of the United States. You have to know what you believe. Certain good decision-making rests on certain basic principles. I believe in the universality of freedom. I believe democracies lead peace. I believe people ought to worship freely. I do believe there’s an Almighty God that has spread freedom, making freedom available for everybody. I believe in private enterprise, I believe in free enterprise. I believe in high standards in education. These are basic beliefs that I’m not going to change. I know some would like me to change. But you can’t be a good decision-maker if you’re trying to please people. You’ve got to stand on what you believe. That’s what you’ve got to do. If you’re going to make decisions that are solid and sound. And I understand some of the things I’ve done are unpopular. But that’s what comes with the territory.

Reuters Says UN Votes No-Confidence in Kofi

A motion “to express a statement of no confidence in the secretary-general and his senior management team” was opposed by just two of the more than 500 U.N. employees attending a closed-door emergency meeting of the staff group, said Staff Union official Guy Candusso.

I am a Lily

HASH(0x8c84c68)
You are a Lily:

You are graceful, gentle, calm, and pure and perhaps a little shy (though your shyness is part of your charm). You are a very honorable person who always wants to do the right thing. Your calm attitude has a soothing effect on others.

Symbolism: The lily has long been used as a symbol of majesty, honor, chastity, and purity of heart.

Update on Christina Desforges' Death

I have been receiving a lot of search hits on Christina Desforges lately so I googled the news…

Fox News has a story from yesterday on the coroner’s report on her death. Apparently she died of a lack of oxygen to her brain, not from anaphylaxis as was previously thought.

Coroner Michel Miron told The Associated Press that it appeared that Christina Desforges, 15, had suffered from “cerebral anoxia,” or a lack of oxygen to the brain, which caused serious damage.

He provided no further details — other than to say that no foul play was suspected in Desforges’ death — because he has yet to submit a final report to the provincial coroner’s office.

Illinois Rejects Driver Card for Illegals

Via The Capitol Fax Blog.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Illinois Legislature rejected a bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants to get a certificate to drive legally in the state. The bill was defeated 59-52. The Trib also reports that supporters of the bill are calling this a victory because more lawmakers were in support of it this time.

Under the measure, undocumented immigrants would have to pass driving tests, present a tax identification number, a foreign passport, file an affidavit that they would apply to be a permanent resident and hand over all illegally obtained driver’s licenses.

Rep. Ron Stephens (R-Mulberry Grove) said people should instead report to immigration offices, become documented and get a legal driver’s license.

Rep. Stephens has it right. Be here legally in the first place, you get the rights and privileges attendant thereto. The granting of rights and privileges to those here unlawfully only encourages such unlawfulness.

More Stupid Press

At the press briefing today: Video at The Political Pit Bull emphasis mine.

Q Scott, while you were gone the Internet reported the President’s statement to Bill Sammon: “I find it interesting that the old way of gathering news is slowly but surely” being – “losing market share. It is interesting to watch those media conglomerates try to deal with the realities of a new kind of world.” And my question first: Considering this presidential statement, when can we expect that what he termed the old and market-losing media will have their reserved seats in the two front rows of this press room reassigned to the new media?

MR. McCLELLAN: Boy, that’s one I don’t really want to open up right now. (Laughter.) I don’t get into book promotions — obviously, you do. But I do look forward to reading that one.

Q Did the President watch any of the Academy Awards for prostitution and sodomy last night?

MR. McCLELLAN: I’m not aware that he caught any of it. I don’t know — I don’t know what you’re referring to, either. Les, I’m going to move on. I just don’t —

Q No, no, just one other —

MR. McCLELLAN: Les, no. I think we’ll stop it at that.

Q He had four.

MR. McCLELLAN: Yes, but —

Q Human events —

MR. McCLELLAN: I’m not going to dignify any more with a response.

What on earth was that all about?

Criminal Non-Reporting?

One of the most insidious forms of media bias is the failure to report. After all, if a tree falls in a forest……Oftentimes the charge that the media has failed to report something is easily defendable. There are, after all, only so many pages in a paper, only so many minutes of a nightly newscast. It becomes less easy to defend when the media has focused on one side of a story while completely omiting another. Coverage of Iraq is the best example. We have daily accounts of suicide bombings, but we have no reporting of any accomplishments there, none.

Once again we are on the brink in the Mideast as Iran attempts to acquire nuclear capabilities. While the media has been busily reporting the (principally media created) “Bush knew the levies would breach” story, we learn that the previous Iranian nuclear negotiator has been bragging to the Iranian elite about Iran’s success at playing the international community while proceeding with their nuclear plans.

Recall that Iran has vowed to eliminate Israel from the face of the planet. They consider the U.S. the “Great Satan”. They openly sponsor terrorism. And now comes news that their negotiations with the E.U. regarding their nuclear ambitions have been a ruse to buy time.

It’s difficult to fathom any news story that is more important than this one. Yet it is virtually nowhere to be seen or read.

At what point does negligent reporting become grossly negligent or even fraudulent?
